Grotta d’acqua (exclave)

Located east of the town of Serradifalco, the district of Grotta d’Acqua is a unique exclave of the municipality, completely surrounded by the territory of Caltanissetta.

Grotta d’acqua (exclave)

This rural area, crossed by State Road 640, is characterized by its hilly, gypsum-rich landscape, dominated by a height called “Lu Vanzu,” named for its distinctive rooster’s crest shape. The district is of significant archaeological interest, with evidence of agricultural settlements dating back to the Neolithic, Copper Age, and Bronze Age.

Among the most important findings is a Mycenaean necropolis with chamber and arcosolium tombs, testifying to the presence of an indigenous settlement, perhaps Hellenized, which flourished during the protohistoric and archaic periods. Grotta d’Acqua is also linked to a local legend: it is said that every seven years, at midnight, in the small square near the “Testa dell’acqua” spring, a magical fair takes place, visible only to those who happen upon it by chance.

Today, the district retains its wild charm and represents an ideal destination for those wishing to explore the most authentic and lesser-known side of Sicily.
