Church of Montserrat

There are records of a district called Monserrato in Delia as early as 1682.

Chiesa di Monserrat

It is very likely that in that year, along the ancient ridge road crossing the top of the hill, opposite the Castellaccio, there already stood a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Montserrat. The patrons of the chapel, and later of the small church, were most probably the Jesuits, who had established their residence, since the early decades of the 17th century, in the nearby villa-farm of Cappellano. In fact, as is well known, the Society of Jesus is particularly devoted to Our Lady of Montserrat, as evidenced by a sum of money sent by the order in the 18th century to the shrine of Our Lady of Montserrat in Spain.

The existence of the small church is documented around the mid-18th century. In the 1771 inventory of the Mother Church, a painting of Our Lady of Montserrat is mentioned; it is now preserved in the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. In 1830 the church was closed by the bishop due to its poor state of preservation, and by 1851 it was already abandoned. After a restoration effort carried out by the Municipality of Delia in 1937, the chapel was once again left unused. Finally, in 1990, the project for the definitive recovery of the building was approved. The main façade faces east, in the direction of the Cappellano district, where the Jesuit villa-farm once stood.
