Gabara Mining Park

2 Minutes of reading

The Gabara Mining Park represents a significant example of the recovery and enhancement of a historic mining area.

Parco Minerario di Gabara

Added in 2023 to the National Network of Italian Mining Parks and Museums (ReMi) of ISPRA, the park offers an immersive experience that combines geology, industrial archaeology, anthropological history, literature, and art. Within the park, visitors can explore the ancient 19th-century sulfur mines, such as the Persico and Giunta Sulfur Mines, with their smelting structures, descenderies, and small wagons. These elements bear witness to the sulfur epic that shaped the region from the early 19th century until its decline in the second half of the 20th century.

The park is also a place of memory and culture, with artistic installations such as Volumi Liquidi by Vincenzo Barba, Ciàula scopre la Luna by Lillo Giuliana, and L’equilibrio della Terra by Franco Politano. Bilingual information panels with QR codes illustrate the history of the Mediterranean and sulfur, curated by the Department of Biology, Geology and Environmental Sciences of UNICT. Since 2023, the park has also served as an academic laboratory, thanks to a formal agreement between the Rector and the Director of the Forestry Agency. A pathway dedicated to writers and poets enriches the cultural depth of the park, culminating in theatrical performances of strong emotional impact.

Surrounded by the Gabara forest, the park also offers nature trails that cross a hilly landscape, enriched by the presence of the Salito River, creating a unique ecosystem where nature and history blend harmoniously.
