Feast of Saint Catald

1 Minute of reading

Every year, on May 10th, the city of San Cataldo dresses up in celebration to honor its patron saint, Saint Catald of Taranto.

The festivities blend faith, tradition, and popular vitality, offering visitors an atmosphere rich in spirituality and Sicilian identity. At the heart of the celebration is the evocative procession of the wooden statue of the saint, accompanied by a bundle of wheat ears - the traditional “musciariddu” - symbolizing hope and agricultural abundance. After the solemn Mass in the Mother Church, the statue is carried through the city streets amid songs, prayers, and the joyful accompaniment of the town band, followed by devotees, confraternities, and civil authorities.

In the evening, Piazza Madrice comes alive with performances, concerts, and fireworks that light up the sky, turning the celebration into an experience that unites the sacred and the folkloric. It is the perfect occasion to discover the authentic heart of inland Sicily - a land of ancient rites and the warm hospitality of the people of San Cataldo.
